The Davidge Family

We came to beekeeping the way most good things happen — by accident. Bees had lived in our chimney for years. After calling out the local beekeeper one too many times, we decided to learn ourselves. A neighbour down the road, no longer able to manage his hives, passed them on to us. We took them on with enthusiasm and absolutely no idea what we were doing.

That was 2020. Since then we have collected swarms from apple trees, rooftops and hedgerows across Edmondsham and the surrounding villages. The whole family is involved — the children help, the ducks supervise, and every jar of honey is filled, labelled and sent by us.

I have had friends asking me to show them how we mark our queens and why.So we made a video. We mark the queen as it makes her easier to spot amongst the other bees. We can also track her if for example she swarmed and we collected it , we would be able to roughly know which hive she came from. Most bee keepers use certain colours for certain years that the queen where raised, this allows the bee keeper to know how old she is, here we just use different colours for each hive because that's how we roll.We placed the queen marking cage gently over the queen and used an orange posca pen to mark her. This is harmless to the bee. Give the paint a few seconds to dry and then we released her. ... See MoreSee Less
